Storyline

When his brother is killed in a robbery, paraplegic Marine Jake Sully decides to take his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora. There he learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge’s intentions of driving off the native humanoid “Na’vi” in order to mine for the precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland. In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers knowledge, of the Indigenous Race and their Culture, for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by gung-ho Colonel Quaritch, while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the Na’vi people with the use of an “avatar” identity. While Jake begins to bond with the native tribe and quickly falls in love with the beautiful alien Neytiri, the restless Colonel moves forward with his ruthless extermination tactics, forcing the soldier to take a stand – and fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora.

About Avatar Movie

    • It is the first installment in the Avatar film series which is set in the mid-22nd century.

    • The title of the film refers to a genetically engineered Na’vi body operated from the brain of a remotely located human that is used to interacting with the natives of Pandora.

    • Development of Avatar began in 1994 when James Cameron wrote an 80-page treatment for the film.

    • Filming was supposed to take place after the completion of Cameron’s 1997 film Titanic, for a planned release in 1999; however, according to Cameron, the necessary technology was not yet available to achieve his vision of the film.

    • Work on the language of the Na’vi began in 2005, and Cameron began developing the screenplay and fictional universe in early 2006.

    • Adjusted for inflation, Avatar is the second-highest-grossing movie of all time, only behind Gone with the Wind, with a total of a little more than $3.5 billion.

    • It also became the first film to gross more than $2 billion and the best-selling video title of 2010 in the United States.

    • Avatar was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won three for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects.

    • Avatar was officially budgeted at $237 million, due to the groundbreaking array of new visual effects Cameron achieved in cooperation with Weta Digital in Wellington. Other estimates put the cost at between $280 million and $310 million for production and $150 million for promotion.

    • Principal photography for Avatar began in April 2007 in Los Angeles and Wellington.
    • Avatar premiered on December 10, 2009, in London and was released in the United States on December 18, 2009, to positive reviews. Critics highly praised its groundbreaking visual effects, though the story was considered to be predictable. During its theatrical run, the film broke several box office records, including becoming the highest-grossing film of all time since January 2010. In July 2019, this position was overtaken by Avengers: Endgame, but with subsequent re-releases, beginning with China in March 2021, it returned to becoming the highest-grossing film since then.
    • Following the film’s success, Cameron signed with 20th Century Fox to produce four sequels. The first sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, was released on December 16, 2022, which received similar reviews and broke various box office records, including becoming the highest-grossing film of that year and the third-highest-grossing film of all time. Avatar 3 has completed principal filming and will be released in 2024. Further sequels are scheduled for release in 2026 and 2028. Several cast members returned, including Worthington, Saldana, Lang, and Weaver.

    • The success of the film also led to electronics manufacturers releasing 3D televisions and caused 3D films to increase in popularity.

    • Avatar 3 has completed principal filming and will be released in 2024.
