About The Exorcist: Believer Movie:
The Exorcist: Believer is an American supernatural horror film directed by David Gordon Green, who co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Sattler from a story by Scott Teems, Danny McBride, and Green.
The Exorcist: Believer is the sixth installment in The Exorcist franchise, and serves as a direct sequel to The Exorcist (1973).
It is intended to be the first of three new The Exorcist films, with the second, The Exorcist: Deceiver, set for release on April 18, 2025. The projects are joint-venture productions between Blumhouse Productions and Morgan Creek Entertainment with Universal Pictures distributing.
Principal photography began in November 2022, in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia. Filming wrapped in early March 2023.
Universal collaborated with Peacock to purchase distribution rights for $400 million total.
On July 26, 2021, it was confirmed that original star Ellen Burstyn would be returning as Chris MacNeil for the first time since The Exorcist (1973). Linda Blair also will be reprising her iconic role as Regan MacNeil. How big her part will be is yet unknown.
Ellen Burstyn had turned down reprising her role and was then offered double the salary. Burstyn thought, “I feel like the devil is asking my price.” She eventually accepted, using the salary to fund an MFA scholarship for actors at Pace University where the Actors Studio teaches the program. Burstyn is a lifelong member of the Actors Studio and a co-president.
The rumor of a remake was based on this sentence in an article published in Deadline in early 2020: “Current Morgan Creek projects include Stay Tuned at AMC, with a planned theatrical reboot of The Exorcist in the works for 2021.” But Morgan Creek hadn’t confirmed that news as of Sept. 8, 2020. They also posted a tweet in 2015 promising they would never attempt to remake it.
There is 50 years between the 1973 film and the upcoming 2023 sequel.
The Exorcist: Believer was released by Universal Pictures in the United States on October 6, 2023. The film was previously set for October 13, before being moved up a week earlier to avoid competition with the concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour. The film is scheduled to be released on digital platforms on October 24, 2023.
The Exorcist: Believer received negative reviews from critics, who felt it failed to reach the height and impact of the original film.
In the United States and Canada, The Exorcist: Believer was projected to gross $30–36 million from 3,663 theaters its opening weekend. The film made $11.8 million on its first day, including $2.9 million from Thursday night previews.
A sequel, entitled The Exorcist: Deceiver, is scheduled to be released on April 18, 2025.
