About Michael Movie:
Michael is an upcoming American biographical musical drama film, based on the life of the American singer, songwriter, and dancer Michael Jackson. It is directed by Antoine Fuqua, written by John Logan, and produced by Graham King, John Branca, and John McClain.
Michael Jackson will be played by his real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in his film debut. The other cast includes Colman Domingo, Nia Long, Miles Teller, Laura Harrier, Kat Graham, Larenz Tate, and Derek Luke.
Development of the film began in 2017, but it wasn’t officially announced until 2019. Lionsgate acquired the distribution rights in February 2022, and casting began in 2023.
Principal photography for the film was initially planned to commence in mid-2023, spanning over 80 days in Santa Barbara. However, filming was delayed in September 2023 due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Eventually, filming began on January 22, 2024, under the working title Maven. Various locations were used for filming, including the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, and Neverland in Los Olivos. The filming concluded on May 30, 2024, lasting a total of 91 days.
According to a source close to the production, at least one other member of Jackson’s family, besides Jaafar, was present on set every day.
Michael is scheduled for release in the United States on April 18, 2025, by Lionsgate, and by Universal Pictures internationally. A surprise first look was shown to theatre owners at CinemaCon on April 10, 2024, to a positive reception.
